Zero Disability

A disease that despite being curable leaves long-lasting physical deformities. But more disturbing than the physical deformities are the mental scars it leaves. The mutilating, disfiguring, contagious nature of the disease causes social exclusion. At GLRA India, we promote not only medical rehabilitation but also the social reintegration of leprosy affected persons post-successful treatment. Early case detection, regular nerve assessment and treatment are the first and foremost pathway to the goal of zero disability supplemented by a range of activities such as voluntary muscle testing, early identification of neuritis, physiotherapy, demonstration of self-care at home for example. GLRA’s partner NGO leprosy hospitals are plying a vital role as nodal centres for the implementation of effective DPMR (Disability Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation) strategies. In addition, these hospitals act as resource centres for the leprosy training of frontline health professionals.
