Zero transmission
India is still diagnosing ± 125000 new leprosy patients including ± 5000 patients with visible (grade II) disabilities every year. Diagnosis of leprosy is still a challenge in both public and private health sector due to lack of and disappearing knowledge and skills. It is important to improve the technical capacity of health staff especially medical doctors and physiotherapists in diagnosis and effective management of leprosy cases including chemoprophylaxis to prevent transmission of leprosy in the community. Damien Foundation India Trust has been focusing on identifying the health staff at each level and improving their knowledge and skills in managing leprosy through strengthening the referral system in the districts.
