ILEP’S MEMBER ASSOCIATIONS ARE WORKING
TOGETHER FOR A WORLD FREE FROM LEPROSY
One of the biggest challenges in the fight against leprosy is the stigma and fear associated with the condition because of which hiding, shying away and late diagnosis are still common. Unfortunately, these factors also end up causing permanent disability, leading to further stigma and discrimination. Also, the stigma and discrimination affect the family members of the leprosy affected; with the children finding it difficult to make friends in school, get employed and married.
This form of discrimination and segregation also finds space within our legal system. Though the rationale for such provisions has become obsolete now that the disease is completely curable, they continue to exist on paper.
ILEP India along with its government and other stakeholders is also ensuring that these laws should erase from the legal system as soon as possible.
